Chapter 9

Salvador kept a tight hold of Davi’s hand as they walked down the stairs to greet their guests. After chewing Thiago out, the man had finally explained that the High Council members that had arrived were there to test that he was indeed the new alpha. They wanted to see if the old alpha’s powers had transferred to him or not.

It was ridiculous in Salvador’s mind, but if that was what it took to remain where he was, Salvador would do it. He couldn’t think of much he wouldn’t do to keep his mate at his side. Davi meant everything to him.

Salvador just prayed he didn’t let out too much. He had no idea what the High Council members would do if they discovered he was Magi, but he was pretty sure it wouldn’t be good. He certainly didn’t want to find out.

“Good morning, gentlemen,” Salvador said as he walked into the living room and saw the three rather fancily dressed men in suits sitting in the room. “What can I do for you?”

“You are Salvador Cavalcante?” one of the men asked.

“I am.” Salvador nodded, quickly noting that the man had a haughty air about him. The way the man looked down his nose like his shit didn’t stink drove Salvador crazy. It was the same way the High Priest of his coven used to look at him. Salvador immediately marked this guy off his Christmas list.

“I am Elder Conte. As was his duty, Beta Thiago Braizer has reported to us that you won a challenge against his former alpha.”

Salvador cocked his head, eyeing the elder carefully. “I wouldn’t exactly say I won a challenge against him. More like he attacked me and I killed him.”

The old man arched his salt-and-pepper-colored eyebrow. “You did not issue a formal challenge?”

“No.”

“And yet you killed him?”

“Like I said, he attacked me. I merely defended myself.”

“I see.” Elder Conte crossed one arm over his chest and rubbed his chin with his hand. “Is violence a normal part of your nature, Mr. Cavalcante?”

Salvador’s lips twisted into a wry smirk. “Only when someone is trying to kill me.”

“Easy, Salvador,” Davi’s whispered into his mind. “This man likes to play games with his words.”

Salvador stilled, the smirk sliding off his face before he could school his features. “Have you met him before?”

“He’s visited the old alpha once or twice.”

“Were they friends?” It would really suck if they were.

“I don’t believe so. The elder always acted like he could barely stand to be in the same room with my old alpha.”

“You were human before you killed the former alpha, is that correct?”

“It’s true that I knew nothing of wolves before then, if that’s what you are trying to figure out,” Salvador said, hoping to change that particular line of questioning. He didn’t want to outright lie to the elder, but he didn’t want to tell him the truth either. “Thiago has been teaching me about wolf kind.”

“Wolf kind, an interesting term to use if you didn’t know about us beforehand.
